Honey Bees

However, honey bees are endangered due to the use of pesticides and other harmful chemicals, climate change, loss of habitat, and disease. For these reasons, it is crucial to protect and conserve honey bees in the region, including reducing the use of harmful chemicals, creating more bee-friendly habitats, and promoting awareness about their importance. Due to their critical role in the ecosystem and the food chain, honey bees are a protected species in New England and cannot be treated. The solution for removal would be to call a Beekeeper in order to relocate the nest.

Mice

Mice pose a significant pest problem, particularly in the New England area, where they are classified as “commensal rodents.” This term is derived from Latin, meaning “together at the table,” as mice survive off the food, water, and shelter that humans provide. Due to their quick gestation periods, mice are prolific breeders, with litters of 6-12 pups born every 20 days, and can reach reproductive maturity in just 4-7 weeks.
However, mice are carriers of multiple diseases and are known to trigger asthma attacks in certain areas.
They can also bring in secondary pests such as ticks and fleas. If left untreated, a mouse infestation can quickly escalate into a more significant issue. Therefore, seeking professional pest control services is recommended for effective management of the situation.

Rats

Rats are commensal rodents that can cause extensive damage to homes during an infestation. Their agility and climbing abilities enable them to enter through holes as small as 1⁄4 of an inch for mice and up to 1⁄2 an inch for rats. Rats reproduce quickly, with litters of 6-12 pups born every 21-23 days and reaching reproductive maturity in just 10-12 weeks. If left untreated, infestations can quickly escalate, causing significant damage to homes. Seeking professional pest control services is recommended for effective
management of rat infestations.

Social Wasps

Social wasps are highly aggressive insects whose primary instinct is to protect their nests. These nests can be found in a variety of locations, such as the ground, trees, or wall voids. Social wasps are known for their distinctive nests, which are often large and spherical in shape, and can contain hundreds or even thousands of wasps. However, it is crucial never to treat a wasp nest in a wall void with an aerosol treatment. Doing so will
only provoke the wasps and cause them to retreat further into the void, which can result in them entering your home. Instead, it is recommended to seek professional pest control services to safely and effectively remove the nest without putting yourself or others at risk of being stung. Social wasps are not to be taken lightly and should be dealt with by trained professionals to prevent any potential harm or injury.

Solitary Wasps

Solitary wasps are known to be the least aggressive of all wasps as they do not actively protect a nest full of other wasps or a queen. Unlike social wasps, solitary wasps do not live in large colonies and instead live alone or in small groups. They are not typically considered a pest as they do not cause damage to property nor pose a significant threat to humans. These wasps can be found in various locations such as under eaves, behind shutters, under railings, or any shaded area that provides protection from the sun. They build comb-like nests, which are smaller and less organized than those of social wasps. These nests can be easily knocked down or removed without the need for professional pest control services. Solitary wasps play an essential role in the ecosystem as they are important pollinators and also help control the population of other insects. While they may not be as well-known as social wasps, solitary wasps are a vital part of the natural world and should be respected for their contribution to the environment.

Spiders

Spiders are arachnids, and in most cases, they do not pose a significant pest issue in New England. However, there are situations where spiders can become a nuisance and require professional intervention to establish a threshold for control. While spiders are generally harmless to humans and serve as important predators of other insects, some species can be poisonous and potentially dangerous to kids and pets. It is important to identify the type of spider in question before attempting any form of control. Professional pest control services can help determine the appropriate measures to take, such as exclusion, habitat modification, or the use of insecticides. In some cases, spider infestations may require ongoing monitoring and control to prevent future occurrences. Overall, while spiders are an important part of the ecosystem, they can sometimes pose a pest issue that needs to be addressed by professionals to ensure the safety and comfort of individuals in the affected area.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are social insects that build their nests in damp wood, and if you live in a wooded area, there may be multiple nests or satellite nests located in your backyard. These ants will send scavengers in search of food and water, and they may find your home as a resource. Carpenter ant nests can reach capacity rapidly, and when this happens, the queen will continue to send winged ants, known as swarmers, to create additional nests or satellite nests. Your home may become a desirable place for these ants to nest during this process. It is important to identify carpenter ant infestations early on, as they can cause significant damage to the structure of your home over time. Professional pest control services can help determine the extent of the infestation and recommend appropriate measures for control and prevention, such as exclusion, removal of damp or damaged wood, and the use of insecticides.

Tiny Ants

Tiny ants are commonly found crawling around kitchen counters and cabinets, in search of any crumbs left behind. These ants are typically small in size and may burrow under your home’s foundation, making their way up to the kitchen. While they may not cause significant structural damage to your home, they can be a nuisance and difficult to control without proper treatment. It is important to address tiny ant infestations
promptly to prevent them from spreading and to maintain a clean and hygienic living space. Professional pest control services can help identify the species of tiny ants and recommend appropriate treatment measures, such as baiting, sealing entry points, and eliminating food and water sources to prevent future infestations.

Carpenter Bees

Carpenter Bees, resembling larger Bumble Bees, can be found in wooded areas surrounding homes, where they bore into siding and deck posts to lay their larvae. Though they are not aggressive and typically do not sting as only females have stingers, their nesting behavior can cause damage to the structure of homes. Removal typically involves treating the holes they create, filling them, and covering them with a fresh coat of paint.
